Time management to work smarter, wake up productive and enjoy life

For years I would wake up, feel stressed about all of the things that i didnt finish getting done the previous day.
I’d open up my email and begin to tackle the days problems as they flew into my inbox.
Putting out fires,
Re-acting,
responding,
repeating,
repairing
regretting.
always working hard.
I never seemed to really catch up.
I decided to take control of my life and to put a plan to mastering my productivity.
I decided to endeavor to learn how to work smarter, instead of harder.
After some research, reading some books, I still didnt have much of a plan and now felt like even the time spent reading the books was a waste of time. In fact, the more I researched, the more I felt information overload and the constant distractions of constantly uncovering and delving deep into new resources was an infinite bottomless rabbit-hole.
I would sit down to get something done, hours later I would look up and realize I had like 12 browser tabs open, have saved a dozen bookmarks, a desktop full of downloads and a to-do list that was longer than when I started.

Online I found a program called ā€œwake up productiveā€ with a plan to help you make the most of your productive time. The training seemed to be easily customizable to my personal needs.
I hesitated at the price of the program the first time i saw it but his free training videos on the site were insightful and helpful.
A few months later I appreciated how much help the free tips had been and I got the whole program.

Now I have a plan and what I spend the most time on is by MY direction. The most time of my day is for;
1) my kids, then
2) my music.
3) business correspondence
4)learning more about everything I can.
I would say the most productive change I have made is to stop multitasking and start each days work time with singularly focused effort, for a minimum of an hour, preferably 2.
Second, I chose to declutter my workspace so I can experience the sense of clarity and calm when I work.
Third, i have decided to reprioritize living MY life MY way as more important than just running in circles putting out fires.
I have to be disciplined, like a savings account. I decided to pay myself first, not just financially into a savings, but in morale by planning my downtime and taking mini-vacations for myself alone and with the family.

We just spent 2 days going to Chicago to see my favorite artist, treat ourselves to a nite in a swanky downtown hotel and explore the miracle mile.
Today, I just got notice of last weeks affiliate sales, nice checks, so its time to go to the pumpkin patch with the kidlets on this beautiful fall day.
thanks and take care.

Hey! Awesome post and RIGHT ON about choosing where you spend your time, your focus, etc.

My tricks (for juggling 4 kids at home, 4 businesses and a full time husband at home too, oy) is to make my critical list the night before…put a dollar amount next to each ‘to-do’ for how profitable it will be, then rank in descending order!

Tackle according to profitability…of course, if income isn’t your focus – then you rank according to motives.

Time
Influence
Lead-Gen
Networking
Kid Time
Etc ;)

Appreciate you Bry! More than you know!

as an additional thought, I’ve just realised something.

you said you just received notification of your affiliate sales.

I’vm always bouncing from one affil account to another, checking stats and amounts, then on to site stats…. and by the time i checked them all, I check them all again cos they might have changed.
every time i get into this loop i have to wrench myself away and force myself to do some work… and then i get distracted by something!
I would love to disconnect from all the stats and affiliate logins, so I think I’ll either:
a) try to make a list of what needs checking and check once a week, or
b) try to automate it (existing service out there?) openX?
I guess a third option, c) is to sack off all these random affiliate schemes and just use one affiliate portal.

anyway, just thinking out loud, looking forward to your next post!

Tony.

That’s great – you made some very good points! I should go out to the Pumpkin Patch more often myself. I like your point about de-klutterring your work space. It applies to one’s computer desktop as well!

Cool tips! I’d like to see an article about…

Time management for Christmas (helping marketers/bloggers spend more time with their family while putting their eBiz on auto-pilot) … :)

So many great tips that I do not know where to start. I am at where you were, 12 tabs open……on the computer most of the day, trying to just get started. I keep thinking, or at least hoping that there is an easier way. I have absolutely come to the conclusion that time management and self discipline are key. I love your list of priorities, cause I am right with you on who is at the top.
I am just getting into this whole aspect of the world really, networking from home, tracking down what work or what doesn’t, and it is great to have someone like you, Bryan, who is straight up, keep your eye on your goal, tell it like it is, smart and most of all able to connect and teach. So if you say to check it out, I am checking it out. So let me know what to do next, right now I am off to sign up for your news letter.
I am also after that going to declutter my workspace……do think that will help.
I also relate to Carrie’s previous post about the list the night before, I like the money idea, I do make mental list in order of importance and accept the fact that some of the stuff on the bottom of the list just might not get done, but it is okay.
Make it a Good Day, know you will.
Thanks for the info, I’ll be back for more.

You got it man! It’s so normal for most to spend the day reacting! I really like what Carrie said about planning your todo the night before…that changes everything! Also, what you said about living and planning things on YOUR terms is critical…you manager to run your business and live life instead of letting your business run you and your life!

Loving it dude…can’t believe I haven’t been over here throwing Joe sammiches all over the place. I’m here now though….where’s the feed?
